iHeartMedia Asheville’s NewsRadio 570 WWNC Wins 2025 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Hurricane Helene Coverage

Congratulations are in order as the incredible NewsRadio 570 WWNC staff in iHeart Asheville are being honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association with a 2025 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for their heroic continuing coverage of the devastating floods that hit Western North Carolina as Hurricane Helene passed through the area.

This honor comes after the NewsRadio 570 WWNC and Asheville staff worked around the clock to keep listeners informed and safe. Host Mark Starling and his producer Tank Spencer remained in their studio throughout the storm, continuing their non-stop, life-saving live coverage for ten days. In addition to providing continual information on the storm’ s progression, food and shelter locations, debris clearance updates, resource gathering and much more, Mark, Tank and other local iHeart talent coordinated wellness checks that reunited 180 families and located over 400 people.

Regional winners automatically advance to the national round of the competition, with winners announced in August and celebrated at the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala in New York City on October 13.

The Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news, honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism since 1971, and represent the embodiment of the values, principles and standards set forth by Edward R. Murrow, a journalism pioneer who set the standards for the highest quality of broadcast journalism. Murrow Award winning stories put public interest above all else, providing a catalyst for public discussion.
