#NewMusicTuesday: Sam Smith, “Too Good at Goodbyes”

We were lucky enough to grab some time with Sam Smith to chat about his new single "Too Good at Goodbyes” – and get the inside scoop on his upcoming sophomore album, too! It’s been more than a year and a half since his last album “In the Lonely Hour,” and we can’t wait to get some fresh Sam Smith tunes back in our lives.

In our interview, Sam admits that his new single isn’t the happiest song. It’s about the end of a relationship and the fear that he’s not as good at being broken up with as he had hoped. But Sam’s not apologetic about the tone; he thinks he will always write sad songs and loves that writing music allows him to express such raw emotion in a way that resonates with others.

And speaking of writing music, Sam revealed to us that he wrote a whopping 140 songs for this album – can you imagine having to narrow that down to 12?! When creating the album, Sam studied Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin and hopes that the inspiration he gleaned from those music legends will shine through in his music. We’re still obsessed with his Top 10 Billboard Hits “Stay With Me” and “I’m Not the Only One” – and are sure his new album will have a number of similar crowd-pleasers.

Sam’s new album has a lot to live up to, considering “In the Lonely Hour” was the year’s biggest selling debut album in 2014. But we’re confident that Sam will wow us again with songs we’ll be dying to sing back to him in concert (which he gushed is his favorite thing about performing). Waiting for a new album can be maddening, but whetting your appetite with Sam Smith’s “oldies” but goodies on iHeartRadio is easy! Enjoy!
